Wailuku, HI – Near-Fatal Motorcycle Accident on Honoapiilani Hwy
April 25, 2022
Wailuku, HI (April 25, 2022) – A three-vehicle accident took place on Honoapiilani Highway on Sunday, April 24th.
The Maui Police Department said the crash occurred at about 5:30 a.m. in the area of Olo Place in Wailuku.
An investigation determined that a 48-year-old male motorcyclist was riding northbound on the highway when he was struck by a southbound Toyota Tundra pick-up truck as it attempted to make a lefthand turn into a private farm.
A Toyota Highlander that was immediately behind the pick-up drove through the debris field caused by the accident.
The motorcyclist was taken by EMTs to a local hospital in a critical, life-threatening condition.
The 30-year-old female driver of the Toyota Highlander and the 37-year-old male driver of the pick-up truck both sustained non-critical injuries.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Motorcycle Injuries in Hawaii
Only 3% of all registered vehicles in Hawaii are motorcycles, but these vehicles are involved in close to 15% of all deadly traffic accidents. Motorcycle crashes are typically very serious because not only are riders fully exposed to the ground and other vehicles, but they have absolutely no safety protections for their riders.
The NHTSA’s Share the Road program was created for the sole purpose of raising awareness of the safety of motorcyclists. Regrettably, motorcycle crashes still happen, and most riders find themselves critically injured in the aftermath.
If you were hurt in a motorcycle accident in Hawaii, you might be qualified to collect damages that can cover your medical costs, lost income from being unable to work, and other losses.
