Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Swimming Pool Safety Tips

July 13, 2018

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 3,500 people die from unintentional drowning accidents each year in the United States. During summer, many people enjoy swimming to beat the heat. However, it is important to exercise caution to avoid a swimming pool accident.

In order to increase your safety at the pool this summer, you need to:

  1. Use the buddy system. It is dangerous to go swimming alone, even as an adult. If an accident happens, there needs to be at least one other person with you to get help or provide assistance. You should always swim with another person, and teach your children to use the buddy system as well.
  2. Teach your kids how to swim. Giving your children formal swimming lessons is important. They will learn valuable skills, such as treading water, and will become more comfortable in the water.
  3. Supervise your children at all times. Adult supervision is essential to avoid a swimming pool accident. For children under the age of 4, an adult should be within arm’s reach at all times while in the water.
  4. Never trust pool toys for safety. Pool toys, such as floating mattresses and other inflatable toys, should not be relied on to keep your kids safe. Children may slip off and fall into the water, and supervision is still necessary to avoid an accident.
  5. Practice common sense. It is important to avoid running around the pool area, because this could lead to a slip and fall accident. Furthermore, you need to always swim where a lifeguard is posted, and avoid diving in undesignated areas.

Swimming in the ocean or another natural body of water also poses serious risks. It is important to wear a coast guard-approved lifejacket at all times, and to look at the weather forecast beforehand. You should also exercise caution when operating a boat, and follow safety guidelines. By using caution, wearing life vests, and supervising all children, you can stay safe and enjoy a fun day on the water.
