Hawaii candy recalls mislabeled products

November 8, 2011

Every year dozens of Hawaii-made products are recalled because they are found to be unsafe. This can be due to unsafe ingredients as well as incorrect labeling. Such was the case with Hawaii Candy, Inc. which on October 28, 2011, issued a voluntary recall of mislabeled products, which were in violation of Department of Health (DOH) safety guidelines.

The company, one of the oldest Hawaii-based companies of its kind in Hawaii, failed to list the ingredient Yellow #6 on several products, which could lead to severe reactions to those who are allergic to the coloring.

Affected products include:

  • Hawaii Candy Fortune Cookies (UPC 073366-12950)
  • Hawaii Candy Petite Wafers (UPC 073366-12952)
  • Hawaii Candy Sesame Wafers (UPC 073366-12954)
  • Hawaii Candy Ginger Wafers (UPC 073366-12955)

The company started shipping mislabeled products starting October 4, 2011. Anyone who may have purchased any of the affected treats are asked to return them to the store where they were bought for a refund. For more information on this product recall, call Hawaii Candy, Inc. at (808) 836-8955.

Earlier this year state health officials issued one of the largest recalls in recent history, recalling more than 100 specialty products from a number of different brands after a Waipahu-based kitchen was found to have inadequate control measures testing and documenting products.
