Pepeekeo, HI – Head-On Crash Leaves 15-Year-Old Dead on Hawaii Belt Rd

August 2, 2022

Pepeekeo, HI (August 02, 2022) – According to Hawaii Island police, a 15-year-old was killed and three others sustained injuries during a three-vehicle, head-on collision on Tuesday, August 2nd.

Police said that the crash took place at about 6:00 p.m. on Hawaii Belt Road near milepost 12 12 in Pepeekeo.

An investigation determined that a Honda Civic was heading southbound on Mamalahoa Highway when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle. The rain-slicked roadway caused the driver to lose control, spin into oncoming traffic, and collide with a Hamakua-bound pick-up truck.

Officials said the driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old male, and his back seat passenger, a 15-year-old boy, were both ejected during the impact. The 16-year-old girl in the front seat was not.

The 15-year-old was unresponsive at the scene. He was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short while later.

The driver sustained severe internal injuries and underwent emergency surgery. The 16-year-old sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the pick-up sustained a broken bone and other non-critical injuries.

A third vehicle that was driving southbound directly behind the Honda was struck by debris from the accident. That driver was unharmed.

Police believe speed is a factor in the incident.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.

Pepeekeo, HI - Head-On Crash Leaves 15-Year-Old Dead on Hawaii Belt Rd

Anytime a person’s dereliction, misconduct, or negligence results in someone’s death, their surviving family members are entitled to bring a claim of wrongful death against the at-fault party.

A wrongful death action is a civil claim, meaning it will be overseen in a civil court and is completely separate from any related criminal case involving the defendant.
