Kapa’a, HI (July 15, 2022) – The Kauai Police Department responded to the scene when a 21-year-old man from California was transported by ambulance to an area hospital on Monday, July 11th after a crash in Kapa’a.
According to officers, they were dispatched to the scene at about 4:25 p.m. for reports of a collision involving a man on a rented scooter on Olohena Road.
A section of roadway between Hauiki Road and Waipouli Road was shut down for about two hours for police investigation and road clean-up.
The victim sustained numerous head injuries. He was initially treated at Wilcox Medical Center and was then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center.
KPD said alcohol and speed do not appear to be a factor in the incident.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Scooter Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds account for slightly more than 3% of all registered vehicles on the Big Island, but they are involved in almost 15% of all deadly traffic accidents. Collisions involving these two-wheeled vehicles are often extremely serious because their operators are fully exposed to the elements, the asphalt, and other vehicles. They also lack even the most fundamental safety features.
The Share the Road program initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was implemented for the singular purpose of increasing awareness of the safety of motorcycle and scooter riders. Sadly, accidents still happen with some regularity, and most operators sustain critical injuries in the aftermath.
