Kahului, HI – Driver Strikes, Critically Injures Pedestrian on Hāna Hwy

Kahului, HI (May 29, 2022) – A man was left with critical, life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car as he attempted to cross the Hāna Highway on Thursday, May 26th in Maui County.
The incident took place at about 5:20 a.m. on the Hāna Highway at the intersection of Hoʻokele Street in Kahului.
A police investigation determined that the driver of a 2005 Honda Civic sedan was heading westbound on the inner lane of the highway when they struck a pedestrian crossing the roadway.
The pedestrian, a 51-year-old local man, was transferred by ambulance to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for immediate treatment.
The driver of the Honda, a 54-year-old man from Haʻikū, was unharmed during the incident.
Police say they have not yet ruled out alcohol or drugs as contributing factors and their investigation into this event is ongoing.
