Hilo, HI (April 23, 2022) – Police were called to investigate a two-vehicle crash that left a motorcycle rider critically injured on Thursday, April 21st at the intersection of Hau Street and Māmalahoa Highway in the Wainaku section of Hilo.
According to reports, at about 8:25 p.m., a 2013 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck made a lefthand turn onto the highway off Hau Street causing a 2005 Honda motorcycle to crash into the driver’s side of the pick-up.
The 39-year-old male biker was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was later transported to Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu in critical but stable condition.
The 47-year-old male driver of the pick-up was unharmed during the accident.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Motorcycle Accidents in Hawaii
Motorcycles make up just 3% of all registered vehicles in Hawaii, but they are involved in more than 15% of all fatal traffic accidents. These accidents are often extremely serious because not only are motorcyclists completely exposed to the asphalt and other vehicles, but they lack even the most basic safety features.
The NHTSA’s Share the Road program was developed with the sole aim of increasing awareness of the presence and safety of riders. Sadly, motorcycle collisions still take place, and most operators find themselves seriously injured as a result.
If you were hurt in a Hawaii motorcycle accident, you are most likely able to collect financial compensation to cover your medical costs, lost wages from being unable to work, and several other damages.
