Hilo, HI – Five Hospitalized After Two-Vehicle Crash on Daniel K. Inouye Hwy

April 20, 2022

Hilo, HI (April 20, 2022) – Five people are recovering in the hospital after being involved in a two-car accident on Tuesday, April 19th on Daniel K. Inouye Highway in East Hawaii.

At the time of the crash, thick fog and heavy rain were blanketing the area.

Hawaii Police Department officers responded to the scene at about 8:30 a.m. Upon their arrival, they determined that a 2012 Ford E350 cargo van heading eastbound towards Hilo swerved into oncoming traffic while attempting to overtake another vehicle near milepost 17.

As the van was moving back into the eastbound lane, a 2020 Jeep Gladiator truck struck the van head-on.

The driver of the van, a 41-year-old man from Captain Cook, was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical but stable condition. He is scheduled to be transported to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for additional medical care.

The driver of the Jeep, a 44-year-old woman from Virginia, was also taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. She is undergoing emergency surgery for her injuries.

Three children inside the Jeep, boys 10, 12, and 14-years-old, were also transported to Hilo Medical Center for treatment. They are listed in stable condition.

Police feel that driver inattention and speed were the primary factors in this accident.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
