May 26, 2022

Haleiwa, HI (May 25, 2022) – A passenger was killed and a driver was left with critical injuries after their motorcycle was rear-ended on the Kamehameha Highway on Tuesday, May 24th in Haleiwa.

The accident took place at about 5:40 p.m. along the Kamehameha Highway, in the area of Achiu Lane. Honolulu Police crash investigators reported that the driver of a Honda Civic, a 40-year-old woman, was traveling southbound on the highway when, for reasons still under investigation, she crashed into the back of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The bike was being operated by a 54-year-old male who had a 54-year-old female as his passenger.

The impact launched the Harley Davidson forward where it smashed into the back of a Dodge van. Emergency responders were dispatched to the area. Upon their arrival, they transported both of the motorcycle riders to a local trauma center in critical conditions. According to HPD officers on the scene, both the man and woman were wearing appropriate helmets.

The motorcycle’s passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital by medical professionals. Both of the victims were tourists on the island.

At the time of the incident, a 4-year-old boy and a 40-year-old woman were inside the Honda. The involved Dodge was being driven by a 39-year-old man. Investigators said that none of them received any significant injuries during the impact.

Alcohol, drugs, and speed are not currently being considered factors in the collision, according to officers.

This incident is still under police investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family in hopes of a full recovery.
