Car Accidents in Hawaii
Hawaii took extreme measures in 2012 to decrease the number of serious injuries and fatalities caused by intoxicated drivers due to the fact that the state’s number of arrests for drunk driving almost doubled between 2008 and 2011.
The state formed an enforcement program called 52/12 wherein one sobriety checkpoint is set up in a random location once a week all year long. The program is designed to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the roadway and, by extension, reduce alcohol-related accidents. After the program was executed, 450 arrests for driving under the influence were made at a total of 600 checkpoints throughout the state.
These numbers make it clear that the program is working as fatal drunk driving accidents fell by 20%
In spite of their best efforts, however, car accidents continue to happen every day and have long-term consequences for injured victims and their families.
