Pedestrian Accident Cases
We see a lot of incidents where people are making a left turn or a right turn and they hit a pedestrian. They’re looking at something else, they’re looking at the traffic, they’re looking at where they’re going and they’re not seeing the person that stepped off the curb that is now walking right into their path. Those people, as they say, feel like they are in the zone of safety and they’re not as aware as they might be if there wasn’t any crosswalk at all. This is especially true when you have midblock crosswalks without any lights, and a lot of times the motorist is not thinking that there’s going to be a pedestrian walking through here. Sometimes the markings have not been repainted and the markings are not that good, but the pedestrian still feels he’s in a zone of safety and the motorist does not see that pedestrian, and then we have some tragic results. (Referring to image) We have a crosswalk there on P--- street and you have cars coming downhill, again, there’s no light at the crosswalk at the stop sign there. And you get pedestrians, some of them very young and going to school, crossing and believing they’re in a zone of safety. Yet you have people coming down without any real recognition that there may be a pedestrian out there, and then they are unable to stop. Again, you have tragic results with that.
