"Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest."

December 10, 2009 @ 12:32 PM — by Reece Frazier
In a press release, sent out on Monday, December 7, 2009, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood announced, "My messages to driver is this:  if you decided to drink, find a safe and sober ride home or your chances of arrest are extremely high.  Law enforcement officers will be out in full force during the upcoming holiday, especially at night and on the weekends, looking for the drunk drivers that put the rest of us at risk."  The NHSTA will be spending more than $7 million in a nationwide television and radio campaign this holiday season to curb drunk driving.  Local law enforcement agencies are cooperating with the NHSTA and stepping up road blocks and other enforcement methods.

A report by the NHTSA reports that there were 107 traffic-related fatalities in the State of Hawaii during 2008, substantially down from 138 deaths in 2007.  Of these, 42 and 44 deaths, respectively, were alcohol-related.
