Potential Results of Traumatic Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. A mild TBI is a concussion. Most concussions require only a few days or weeks of rest to heal. A person who sustains a concussion may experience short-term loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, and/or short-term problems with concentration, memory, judgment, and physical coordination.

If concussion symptoms do not subside after several weeks, the victim may be said to have post-concussion syndrome. For unknown reasons, concussion symptoms may linger for months or longer in some cases. In addition to the physical suffering, the continuing uncertainty of post-concussion syndrome may lead to anxiety or depression. More serious brain injuries can be debilitating.

Symptoms of a serious TBI include:

  • Confusion
  • Visual - spatial impairment
  • Memory deficits
  • Reduced attention and concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Depression, anxiety
  • Impaired thinking ability, including impaired logic and loss of big picture thinking
  • Decreased control over body movements
  • Language difficulties in understanding spoken words
