Nicole Kalakau

Nicole Kalakau grew up on the Hawaiian Homesteads of Waimanalo and was very fortunate to start her academic career at The Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama Campus. At Kamehameha, she excelled academically and was recognized for her superior athletic ability. She earned a full softball scholarship from Hawaii Pacific University where she served as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee President. As a scholar athlete, Nicole was awarded numerous NCAA II Pacific West Conference Honors and accolades throughout her four-year career, including Pacific West Player of the Week and Multiple All-Conference Honors.

Her Bachelor of Arts degree in Corporate Communications, as well as her minor in Intercultural Studies, prepared Nicole for her next academic challenge. She was focused on completing her Juris Doctorate degree from Gonzaga University School of Law and was able to do so in two-and-a-half years. She completed her last semester as an extern for United States District Court Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi in Honolulu. During her time at Gonzaga, she was an associate editor for the Gonzaga Journal of International Law and the Asian Pacific Islander Law Caucus class representative. Nicole also received a CALI award of Excellence in Legal Research and Writing.

Nicole was honored to start her legal career as an advocate for victims in Honolulu as a Deputy Prosecutor. For five years, she prosecuted a variety of crimes including traffic offenses, drug offenses, financial crimes, and violent crimes and has a great deal of jury trial experience. Just prior to leaving the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office, she was the Captain of the Domestic Violence Felony Team and handled many high profile cases, including child abuse and murder cases. As the previous Captain of the Domestic Violence Felony Division, she continues to be a champion for Women, Children and Victim’s rights.

Nicole is committed to the people of her home state of Hawaii and is forever committed to fostering her trial experience as a prosecutor into a new area of practice as an advocate for fairness and justice at Leavitt, Yamane & Soldner.
